With nearly 20 years of hands-on experience on the Big Island, Kawika has been designing and sizing off-grid solar systems for both residential and commercial clients. His work has helped power more than 2,500 homes across Hawaii, bringing sustainable, independent energy solutions to families and communities.
For many years, he also helped manage & operate a local solar business in Hilo, giving him deep insight into the unique challenges and opportunities of Hawaii’s renewable energy landscape. Kawika continues to actively design and size new systems, while also troubleshooting and assessing existing installations.
Beyond technical work, he is passionate about teaching — offering one-on-one DIY tutorials, group consultations, and workshops covering installation techniques, load calculations, system design, and troubleshooting. Each session is tailored to a client’s exact solar zone and lifestyle needs.
His expertise extends to the classroom as well, where he has partnered with local schools, including the University of Hawaii, to support photovoltaic education and training. Known for his ability to take complex concepts and make them clear and practical, Kawika empowers people to take charge of their own energy future.
At the heart of his work, Kawika (and Aunty D) bring more than technical knowledge — they bring huge hearts for people. Guided by the belief that we are all rowing in the same canoe, they see solar energy as not just a technology, but as a way to build community resilience and a more sustainable Hawaii.
Beyond solar, Kawika partners with his wife Dayna (Aunty Day) to offer sustainability consultations that integrate renewable energy, herbal wellness, and practical lifestyle planning. Together, they help households create custom paths to resilience — from lowering power bills and preparing for outages, to building healthier, more self-sufficient lives rooted in the ʻāina.
